Talking About Storage Units

4 Items That Need To Be Stored In A Climate-Controlled Self-Storage Unit

Whether you want to move houses, reduce clutter, or create extra space in your home or office, you may need to rent a storage unit. Now, most of your household items can be wrapped and kept in boxes in a standard self-storage unit.

However, some items would be damaged by fluctuating temperatures and humidity, and these need to be stored in climate-controlled self-storage units.

Wood and Leather Furniture

Changing temperatures cause wood to expand and contract, potentially leading to loose joints and cracks. When there are high humidity levels, some moisture may get into the wood, causing it to warp, crack, or even rot.

Similarly, leather can warp from high temperatures and shrink from high humidity. It also needs to breathe to prevent pungent smells, which means storing leather furniture in a dust-free place. Overall, you need to rent a climate-controlled self-storage unit if you are storing any wood or leather furniture items, especially over a long period.

Electronics

Extreme temperatures cause cracking and/or rusting in electronics and can even lead to total breakdown. High humidity levels also damage the internal wiring and cause rusting to the internal parts.

Protect your valuable electronics by storing them in climate-controlled storage units. Before storage, it is also advisable to clean, cool, and dry them thoroughly to ensure they are free from moisture during the storage period.

Musical Instruments

Most musical instruments are not only pricey, but they also hold special places in your hearts. If you are storing a piano, then it needs to be protected from extreme temperatures and humidity as they would damage its shape and condition.

Wood and string instruments also tend to expand and contract when exposed to fluctuating temperatures, while woodwind and brass instruments are prone to nasty bacteria. Hence, climate control is essential whether you are storing your musical instruments for a couple of months or longer.

Artworks, Photos, and Collectibles

Artwork and photos are best kept in cold and dry conditions without sudden temperature changes. Extreme temperatures would cause the canvas to shrink, while humid environments promote mold and mildew growth which can damage your valuable items.

With collectibles, the most critical thing to avoid is light because it can damage any type of collectible, especially those made of fabric, wood, or paper. Additionally, temperatures and humidity levels need to be steady to avoid damage. These conditions are only possible with a climate-controlled storage unit.
